    about gabbs

31 years of books giving back.

The Great Auckland Bargain Book Sale (GABBS) is an annual community fundraising event and New Zealand’s largest book fair. For 31 years, donated books and the support of our volunteers and wider Auckland community have helped us raise funds for local community groups, charities and organisations. The fair takes place on the first full weekend of November each year, with tens of thousands of books and other donated items collected and sorted by volunteers throughout the year. But GABBS is about much more than finding a great book.Every purchase helps us give back to the organisations doing great work in our communities.

    Where the funds go

Every book helps support our community. Funds raised support a number of local community groups and charities. These include:East City Community Trust
Local sports clubs throughout the Eastern Bays, including futsal, soccer, volleyball, basketball and pétanque
    Lions Clubs
    Rotary Clubs
    Men’s Shed
    From Me to PNG
We are proud supporters of From Me to PNG, a charity providing educational books and resources to children and schools in Papua New Guinea. Each year, GABBS also chooses a charity to receive a dedicated donation from the funds raised at the fair.In 2025, this was Auckland and Central Riding for the Disabled, and we are proud to be supporting them again as our chosen charity for 2026.
